Self-Guided Gallery Exploration at the AzMNH

$5.00 per person including teachers and chaperones

  • Appropriate for any grade level
  • Available Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m. till 5 p.m.

The regular field trip is a self-exploration of our fabulous galleries. We feature heavily in earth science and ancient cultures of the Americas, so this is a great place to come for geology, paleontology and anthropology as well as history of Arizona.

Our exhibits are applicable to many of the current K-12 Arizona Academic Standards, particularly Arizona Studies (prehistoric to present day) and Regions and Cultures of the Americas.

Our Museum volunteers can often be found in the galleries with hands on artifacts and personalized information.

A teacher preview pass is available for free to visit the museum and create lesson material.

Teacher Education packets are available for supplemental learning in the classroom upon request.

Maps of the museum are sent to lead teacher at the time of booking, that can be forwarded to all teachers and chaperones for trip planning purposes.

**Self-guided tours to the museum should be booked at least two weeks in advance.**

**We regulate numbers in the museum for the benefit of the public so please inform us of any relevant change to your group reservation.**

Additional Booking Policies and suggestions when booking an Explore More guided field trip
All field trips must be booked through http://arizonamuseumofnaturalhistory.org/plan-a-visit/booking-request-form

We aim to serve ALL students. Explore Mores are designed to be inclusive field trips. Our educators offer hands on opportunities to learn, the public is not in the Museum during the program, and many sound effects are not turned on during the program. When booking, let us know if there is anything we can do to enhance the experience for your students.

One group can be booked per day for an Explore More so please have more than one date chosen for your trip in case your first choice has already been taken. If required to change the date or cancel your trip, please let us know as soon as possible in order to open the opportunity to others.

Explore More guided field trip requests must be submitted at least two weeks in advance and have a minimum of 15 guests.

Our preference is to limit each Explore More to a maximum of 4 classes, but have hosted up to 6 classes at a time. If you are looking to bring 5 or 6 classes, please call first to see if we have the staff to cover your desired date.

Teachers and chaperones are not free. We charge a low per person rate for every individual that is attending the trip.

If you have additional questions regarding Explore Mores please contact Katelyn.jaworski@mesaaz.gov

Explore More field trips cannot occur in our galleries once the Museum opens to the public. Occasionally we can adjust the program to start later depending on the group size and availability of other private use spaces in the Museum. If you are interested in adjusting the 9-10 a.m. program time, you must call and speak with Museum staff to discuss your options.

Cancellations must be communicated to us as soon as possible. Please email Katelyn.jaworski@mesaaz.gov so we have written documentation.

  • Minimum of 15 guests
  • Available Wednesday-Friday, starting at 10:00 a.m.

This is an educator guided field trip to Mesa Grande Cultural Park, a couple of miles north of the museum. It is the location of a Hohokam platform mound and an actual archaeological site. It is entirely outdoors, so plan to get the real archaeological experience of being dirty, sweaty and in the elements!

The students are led by staff and/or docents who have archaeological and anthropological experience and are familiar with the latest techniques and research. The students map a unit, sieve for and examine real artifacts, take a tour, learn about diet and life in the desert, and experience the thrill of hunting for fake rabbits using the same techniques as the Hohokam.

This program is highly adaptable for any level above 3rd grade. We are also able to serve special needs programs, including groups with physical disabilities. This program generally has a minimum of 15 guests and a maximum of 150. Please contact us if you are a smaller special needs program.

Combined AzMNH/Mesa Grande Field Trip

$9.00 per person including teachers and chaperones

  • Minimum of 15 guests
  • Available Wednesday-Friday, starting at 10:00 a.m. Mesa Grande field trips are only available during the months of October till April due to the outdoor nature of the program and the likelihood of extreme heat.

This field trip combines the Mesa Grande archaeological adventure (educator guided program) with a self-guided exploration of the Arizona Museum of Natural history.

Joint field trips are a wonderful opportunity for the students to see the scientific method in action along with the interpretation of those results in a museum setting. Large groups (over 75) are divided in half and switch between the Mesa Grande program and visiting the AZ Museum of Natural History and will have the opportunity to eat lunch at the Mesa Grande site.

Interactive Mesa Grande and Mesa Grande/AzMNH Joint Field Trips

Mesa Grande field trips are dynamic experiences designed to fit into Arizona Science and Social Science Standards. Each trip is led by trained teams of archaeological educators, making each trip an exclusive use program at the site. They require a significant amount of preparation, organization and staffing to offer your schools a unique program that can stand alone or enhance a museum trip.  Given the time that goes into our training and booking, these policies apply specifically for this one of a kind program.
