Mesa Grande Archaeological Adventure field trip
Mesa Grande field trips are completely booked for this school year, and will become available again in late October 2017.
$6.00 per person including teachers and chaperones
- For 4th grade and up only
- Minimum of 15 guests
- Available Wednesday-Friday
This is an educator guided field trip to Mesa Grande Cultural Park, a couple of miles north of the museum. It is the location of a Hohokam platform mound and an active archaeological site. It is entirely outdoors, so plan to get the real archaeological experience of being dirty, sweaty and in the elements!
The students are led by trained and experienced archaeologists and paleontologists, who are familiar with the latest techniques and research. The students map a unit, sieve for and examine real artifacts, take a tour, learn about diet and life in the desert, and experience the thrill of hunting for fake rabbits using the same techniques as the Hohokam.
This program is highly adaptable for any level above 4th grade. We are also able to serve special needs programs, including groups with physical disabilities. This program generally has a minimum of 15 guests and a maximum of 200. Please contact us if you are a smaller special needs program.
All field trips must be booked through http://arizonamuseumofnaturalhistory.org/plan-a-visit/booking-request-form or call the booking line at 480-644-3553. Mesa Grande is an exclusive use site so please have more than one date chosen for your trip in case your first choice has already been taken. If you are Title I please indicate your status in the Notes section of the booking request form. It may take a few days to process your request. Thank you for your patience.
Teachers and chaperones are not free at Mesa Grande or the AzMNH and they never have been. We charge a low per person rate for every individual that is attending the trip.
Most questions before and after booking can be answered by checking our FAQ page at http://arizonamuseumofnaturalhistory.org/for-educators/field-trips/mesa-grande-fieldtrip-faqsbut if you do not find your answer there please contact Emily.firstname.lastname@example.org.
*Mesa Grande field trips require a $100 non-refundable deposit that will go towards the cost of your trip and keep your date held. NOTE: If you cancel your trip, the deposit will not be returned.
*Rescheduling and Cancellation Policies
Trips may be rescheduled once, 31 days or more in advance. If you initially book your trip less than 31 days out, you will not be permitted to reschedule.
If you need a schedule that differs from our typical 90 minute program that runs from 10-11:30 in the morning and/or 12-1:30 in the afternoon (you can find the typical schedule in the FAQ section of the website that is linked in our Booking Policies), you must alert staff either in the Notes section of the booking request form or as soon as you receive your confirmation. Trips are staffed over a month in advance and changes such as late start will not be made the week of your trip.
Cancellations result in the loss of your deposit. You have one week between receiving your confirmation letter and submitting the deposit to hold your date. During that week confirm your availability with your administration and check on your transportation. A reschedule during that period WILL count as your one reschedule.
Enjoy your field trip to Mesa Grande!
*New policy effective for trips booked beginning December 15, 2016
